Background of the Study
Mother-child health remains a crucial aspect of public health, especially in developing countries where maternal and child mortality rates are high. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2024), maternal and child health interventions are essential for reducing preventable deaths caused by complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and infancy. Despite global efforts to improve maternal and child health, Nigeria continues to face significant challenges, including inadequate healthcare access, poor health literacy, and socio-cultural barriers to healthcare utilization (UNICEF, 2024).
Community outreach programs have proven effective in addressing gaps in healthcare access, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a vital role in implementing these programs by providing maternal education, immunization services, antenatal and postnatal care, and nutrition counseling (Adamu et al., 2023). Through outreach programs, nurses extend healthcare services to marginalized populations, thereby improving maternal and child health outcomes (Bello & Eze, 2024).
In Kogi State, high maternal and infant mortality rates highlight the need for effective community-based healthcare interventions. Limited healthcare infrastructure and cultural misconceptions about modern medicine contribute to low utilization of maternal and child health services (Okoh et al., 2024). Nurses, through community outreach initiatives, can bridge this gap by providing essential health services and educating mothers on best practices for child health and survival. This study aims to examine the role of nurses in improving mother-child health through community outreach programs in Kogi State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various governmental and non-governmental initiatives, maternal and child health indicators in Kogi State remain poor. Many rural communities lack access to quality healthcare, leading to high rates of maternal deaths, infant mortality, and childhood malnutrition (Ogundipe & Yusuf, 2024). Nurses, who play a critical role in community health outreach, often face challenges such as inadequate training, logistical constraints, and resistance from traditional healthcare systems.
Existing studies have shown that nurse-led community outreach programs significantly improve maternal health outcomes (Ajayi et al., 2023). However, in Kogi State, there is limited research on the impact of such programs. This study seeks to assess how nurses contribute to mother-child health through outreach efforts and identify barriers that limit their effectiveness.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led community outreach programs on maternal and child health in Kogi State.
2. To identify challenges faced by nurses in implementing outreach programs.
3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of community outreach in improving mother-child health.
Research Questions
1. How do nurse-led community outreach programs impact maternal and child health in Kogi State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in delivering outreach services?
3. What strategies can improve the effectiveness of community outreach programs for mother-child health?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led community outreach programs significantly improve maternal and child health outcomes in Kogi State.
2. Socio-cultural and logistical barriers hinder the effectiveness of community outreach programs.
3. Enhancing training and resource allocation will improve nurse-led outreach programs in maternal and child health.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nurses involved in maternal and child health outreach programs in Kogi State, examining their roles and the effectiveness of their interventions. The study does not include other healthcare professionals such as doctors or traditional birth attendants. A potential limitation is that the study relies on self-reported data from nurses and mothers, which may introduce response bias.
